MEET THE DESIGNER: SAFOMASI

Safomasi began as a way for us to work together and combine our passion for design and travel, with the idea that we would spend time in different places and gather inspiration to create collections that captured our experiences and observations.

Sarah and Maninder - the duo behind Safomasi - work out of a beautiful light-filled studio in Saket, Delhi. We journeyed there for a chat about inspiration, aesthetics and their vision for their amazing brand.

You have such a great name - how did you arrive at it?
Thank you! Safomasi is a mix of both of our names - Sarah Fotheringham (Safo) and Maninder Singh (masi). As all our designs are inspired by our personal travels and observations, we wanted a brand name that reflected us, yet at the same time sounded a bit abstract, like it could come from any part of the world. We were playing around with lots of ideas, came up with Safomasi and it stuck!
Safomasi began as a way for us to work together and combine our passion for design and travel. It started with the idea that we would spend time in different places and gather inspiration to create collections that captured our experiences and observations of that place. That mission is still there, though as a company we have grown organically. We spent a long time sampling and experimenting in the beginning, slowly expanding our product range and our customers until we could get the studio space and small team we have today.
What drives your design aesthetic? What catches your eye?
We love colour, pattern and detail. Our style is playful and often figurative. We find things that seem the same, but are actually different, interesting. It was this observation in Pushkar that from afar all the camels looked the same, but up close you could see that they all had their own styles and forms of decoration that inspired the Different Different Camels design. Similarly the Mithai design records the variety of Indian sweets - we've illustrated 169 different mithai in our repeat.

Could you share what you plan to do next with Safomasi?
Put our patterns on more products! We‘ve got a new line of bags and accessories coming out soon, and we've been experimenting with a few pieces of clothing too. Plus of course new collections inspired by new places...
